Infinite Summer

If I promise not to post spoilers, can I play along too?

I am re-reading.

To give you some background, I was working through the books in the (free online) class until today. To this point, most of the books have been good. I got to the Philip Roth novel, 'The Human Stain'. Wallace lumped Roth in with "the Great Male Narcissists of post-war literature" and after reading IJ, I understand what he means. DFW killed my taste for book by authors like Roth. Now, as I read I think of the author droning on and on about himself.. "me me me, what it's like to be me now that I am older, my characters are all me too, blah blah blah".

After 40 pages of this droning I decided I'd much rather read IJ again. After I read it, I will get back to the last two books of the course "The Known World" and "Everything is Illuminated".

How did you come about doing a re-read?

I'm re-reading as well. I just finished my first reading 12 days ago. I finished the book and had questions about some of the unresolved parts of the book and stumbled upon this site.

Side note: I like that the message body is "restricted" to 60,000 characters. That's the fun part of Infinite Jest, and I guess by extension, the groups talking about IJ. GO BIG OR GO HOME!

I'm re-reading. This is my second go around with IJ. The first time was a few years ago while in college, on the suggestion of a professor. I'm curious to see how I will feel about IJ the second time.

I talked my sister into reading IJ for her first time, so I'm re-reading along with her. I'm sure I'll make connections that I didn't make the first time.

I am also re-reading. My first reading of IJ was in 2000, and I was in college. I'm so excited about Infinite Summer and look forward to hearing everybody's opinions!!!

This is my 3rd read.

2nd time for me, but I am actually reading it this time. My first time with this book was about two years ago and I was challenged to read it in 30 days, I did but it was more about finishing, then actually enjoying.

This is my 5th read-through.. I joined the Wallace-1 list about 6 months after IJ was published 1996.
And I never ever remember reading about the flying mucous-sucking out of poor babies eyes--roaches. Carol

This is my second read. First one was must've been at least ten years ago. So much of it feels brand new this time around, though rarely a week has gone by these last ten years that real life hasn't triggered some scene from Infinite Jest re-playing in my head ending usually in a chuckle either audible or not. It's stuck with me more than any other book I've ever read.
