I may very well "win" the age thing. I am 58, but bought the book in 1996. Too busy grading essays, teaching literature and creative writing, I always found its heft and language to daunting ever to finish. Now I'm retired, and, having bought a Kindle for some surgery, began IJ on Kindle, which has caused some page number issues, but that's the least of my worries. I loved the nonlinear nature of Beloved, and I have thoroughly enjoyed DFW's essays so far (haven't received my copy yet of Consider the Lobster), but this literature is rich and deep and I'm certain I'm missing way too much. Honest: I've already finished the book, and I'm rereading 75 pages at a time, hoping to have a sense (that I don't have now) that I am a reader to whom DFW was speaking.

I'm 39. I first attempted the book ten years ago. Sidenote: I just found my B&N receipt stuck in the book from January 1998. Also have found a ten year old boarding pass, and a alumni letter from my college. My book doubles as my own personal archeological dig.

For all the young 'uns reading it, congratulations! Yes, I think having some life experiences under your belt helps while reading certain books. But, being introduced at 16 to literature (outside of the high school reading list) that resonates with you makes life so much richer. I hope you're having the experience I did when I started reading Vonegut at 15.

ETA: Forgot, before IJ I read Broom of the System and one his articles ("Host").

49, the 60 in my nickname is just my birth year. I read IJ the first time (in Italian, the first and unique translation in another language, waiting for the german one...) in 2007 and the second time during the last winter (in English). In between I read (and reread...) almost all DFW works.
Actually this is NOT my third reading, since I'm following your wonderful experience and comments and forum, but I'm not reading... (not in the same order at least...). r

58 and soon to be 59 as of this reading. When I completed IJ the first time I'd just turned 54.
