Just an exacto knife, or similarly sharp object.

I was hasty and used a chef's knife because I was hungover and wanted to give the first 150 pages to my lover before departing for Vancouver, accidentally butchering the bottom of a few pages and requiring some ugly tape to keep some of it together. But I still give this strategy my full endorsement.

Yes, if you are the kind that travels on foot and prefers having the written word with you wherever you go, I advice cutting the book into three or four sections.
Of course, this means also cutting up the endnotes so that they match the sections as well, but I claim that it is well worth it. Now I realize that there is a (self-consciously uncomfortable) degree of pride or conceit in whipping out a small baby at your local cafe, as one of the front-page bloggers reading IJ on a kindle mentioned. Personally however, sloth and the desire for mobility outweighs my egoism.

As for the value of keeping the book intact, unless you have a first edition, I wouldn't consider it. According to my sources there are a googolplex of them out there.

Yeah, the phallocentric part of me takes delight in the fact it's so big to be honest. I wouldn't want it to be any smaller in public. In private I'd gladly have a smaller edition.

I once tried very hard to find out if there was a large-print version of IJ.

Never found one.
