Hello,

There used to be something on the sidebar saying that the plan was to read Dracula in October, something TBD in Nov./Dec., and start 2666 from January. That information is no longer there.

Does anyone know if there is another book on the horizon? I'd like to try to get the next book from my library and put 2666 on my Christmas list...

Thanks!

I'm not sure why, but that information appears to have been delegated to the archive page here:

http://infinitesummer.org/archives

It still shows as blank between Dracula and 2666.

I'm going to keep pushing for House of Leaves. It's narrated a little like Dracula, but it's as post-modern as Infinite Jest. And unlike Dracula, it's actually frightening, and filled with clever twists and fantastic moments. It's also filled with secrets; the sort that are best covered by a mass of like-minded readers.

Now, on the one hand, House of Leaves is one of my favorite books, and I would never want to discourage anyone from reading it (and it reads much faster than its page count suggests, so it could fit in the blank spot). On the other hand, there's already an internet community that's spent a whole lot of time uncovering a ton of codes/references/anything you could ever want to know about the book (http://www.houseofleaves.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=5). I mean, seriously. The amount of stuff these people have figured out is really impressive.

Sutpen, valid point. But you could say the exact same thing about Infinite Jest, which already had a large community, two published "accompanying" texts, a list-serv, two fan sites, and a wiki, long before Infinite Summer came along and decided to "climb" that mountain.

It's starting to look like nothing is slated for Infinite Summer after October...

Don't even know if this thread is still being read, but...

I like our Guides and I also kind of like being told what to read (Weird. I know. But stick with me.) Book group/clubs often don't do it for me because they are sometimes overly democratic affairs ... a group of people who know each other to some extent get together and read a book they all agree needs reading.

On the other hand, when I ran across infinitesummer.org, it was a going concern, a train that was leaving the station with a set destination. Get on and ride till the end or stay on as long as you want. No one knows anyone on the train, but we all seem to think that page 981 was a pretty good destination even if we didn't know precisely what 981 was.

All of this to say that I really like the idea that matthewbaldwin lays out at the beginning of this thread, that of a parameter-driven group where the decision is ultimately made by a small group of people (the Guides). If left to me own devices, I know what kind of books I would pick. And it's forcing myself to read beyond what I know that's made infinitesummer so enjoyable.
