I'm watching the Wimbledon Men's Finals right now (and am stressed to the max!), and I can't help but be frustrated that DFW can't witness Roger Federer as he strives to make tennis history today. It reminded me of Wallace's piece from the NY Times PLAY magazine from a few years back, entitled "Roger Federer as Religious Experience." It's great reading for tennis fans, but I think it will be interesting even to people not terribly familiar with tennis, but who are getting a taste now while reading IJ. Here's the link: |

Was my first experience of reading DFW. Pretty much the finest piece of sports writing I've ever read. I'm just glad he saw last year's final before he went. Even though Federer lost, that match was so full of "Federer moments" it was unbelievable. |

From TheBigLead: "Federer’s career record is 182-26. In the last five years, he’s an astonishing 121-8. " That is INSANE! I need to read DFW's words on him even more now! |

I liked boasting to my tennis loving friend that I'm reading the author of the best tennis articles ever written. Alas, he never read them, and he reads everything on tennis. Oh yeah, I found this one called String Theory: http://www.esquire.com/features/sports/ ... heory-0796 I didn't understand half of those tennis articles though. Not a tennis watcher. |
