Notice how about half of the names are really hard to pronounce.. Ted Schact, Jim Troeltsh, Graham Rader, jim Struck, Peter Peak, Keven blott, Idris Arslanian, Keith Freer , Disney R. Leith. My mouth gets all tardive dyskinesia-ish just trying to say Troeltsh.. Ted Schact.. these names do not trippingly roll off the tongue. Marathe..Now, does, this signify anything?? Of course it must.. I don't thik Troeltsh is particularly likeable.. He's always 'rhinovirally ' affected in some disgusting way and is always calling the action using his fist as a microphone.
But other names are just magical.. Incandenza,Ortho 'the darkness" Stice, Sleepy (T.P.) Peterson, Tall Paul Shaw, John (N.R.) Wayne.
Trevor Axford. Ann if I may just for one second mention on eof the female students.. Ann Kittenplan.. how sweet is that?
So did any of you notice this phenomenon as well?

Definitely have noticed. Many of them are pretty funny, too. "Schtitt," anyone? Kittenplan's rather sweet, girlish surname is also made pretty comical by Wallace's descriptions of her, both physically and interpersonally.

Mildred Bonk is hysterical. As well as U.S.S. Millicent Kent. But hey, what about Zoltan Csikzentmihalyi? Holy crap! :)

I'd never had the pleasure of hearing the distinguished-sounding "Hugh G. Rection" before (endnote 24).

See? That's why a group read is so great! I would never have known that fact. Knowing DFW, he was probably aware of this guy's writing. Sounds like the sort of concept that would work in "The Pale King", i.e. absorption in the task at hand. Thanks!

I'd say definitely a shout-out. According to Wikipedia, so, you know, grain of salt, etc, Csikszentmihalyi is a professor at Claremont Graduate Institute, so somewhat of a former colleague of DFWs.

I love the names too (e.g. Yushityu). But for the most part I don't find the students' names over-the-top crazy or too hard to pronounce. Maybe that's just because my 10-letter German last name requires some careful treatment, and I'm sensitive to pronunciation.
