Pontius_pirate, thanks for reminding us that the skull-digging is mentioned on p.17. I *knew* we had come across it already (I'm a first-time reader too), but couldn't find the exact mention. And now I also know that Gately was there with Hal, so they must know each other or meet later. And thanks to the poster who defined Lactrodectus Mantans. Cool. There are lots of bugs in here. |

my favorite "lol" moment of this endnote (in which i actually did laugh out loud) was in the introductory paragraph: "...and lastly that certain of his high-conceptual projects' agendas required that they be titled and subjected to critique but never filmed, making their status as film subject to controversy" (985). other notes: near eastern medical attache (992) hamlet reference: "play within play" (993) sorry friends, i'm a bit behind... |

I accidently dropped this post into the wrong thread so I'm just cut/pasting it here since someone brought up the question of what relevance there might be to the names of the different film production company names used by DFW. One thing I wonder about is what meaning there is behind the changes in production studios Himself uses...is it significant, coy, or DFW coming up with different studio names for the sake of coming up with different studio names? Lactrodectus Mactans is the latin name for the Black Widow Spider. Poor Yorick is, of course, Hamlet Meniscus is a curve that can be convex or concave Heliotrope can refer to a color (pink/purple), an instrument that uses mirrors to reflect sunlight that's used for triangulations in land surveys, plants turning toward the sun. As to Heliotrope Films Ltd, I'm going with the triangulation instrument meaning of the term since it hits the triangles and mirrors topics IJ seems rife with allusions to. |

So that would make the symbols at the start of most sections a meniscus. I wonder if that has any sort of meaning in and of itself in relationship to JOI's films. |
