It's because IJ is a fractal. Look at the pictures on the Wikipedia for the Mandelbrot set, which is a really neat fractal. Self-similarity, repetition across scale and space (the small looks the same as the large, like how a big river and a tiny drizzle of water on the ground both have the same kind of shape). There are lots of these repeating images in the novel. |
