I know that a lot of you are moving on to Dracula, and others are reading Gravity's Rainbow, but I was curious, on an individual basis, what book are you moving on to next? I myself am not sure; I might want to reread something old I love, and I'm also on the lookout for something much breezier. What are you considering? Are you tackling another feat of a novel, or are you picking up something light to try to catch your breath?

Before I start Dracula, I'm going to read some nonfiction. "Why People Believe Weird Things" by Michael Shermer is working its way out of the bookshelf.

I posted about this in another forum, but "House of Leaves."

I'm currently reading Spook Country and halfway through it. There's some non-fiction I have queued up. Probably Johah Lehrer's How We Decide.

I have a hard time reading just one book at a time, so right now I'm working on...

The Orchard Keeper by Cormac McCarthy
Finnegans Wake by James Joyce
The Collected Novellas by Arno Schmidt (highly recommended for Joyce fans)

i went to some nonfiction after i finished, because i felt like infinite jest was going to dwarf any other fiction i read for a while. i read 'i and thou' by martin buber, because i saw that there was an essay linking some of its ideas to IJ (justifiably, i think, although i found a lot of the book very mystical and incomprehensible. i thought part three was the clearest and most valuable), and i read 'the divided self' by r.d. laing. i read a very short fiction book, 'after dark' by haruki murakami, and thought it was really lame.

but the next big book i want to read, when i feel ready for it, is "2666" by roberto bolano.

I started Lorrie Moore's Anagrams last night. While slimmer than IJ, she balances the serious and the funny in a similar way.

Before Infinite Summer, I was tackling Gravity's Rainbow for the first time, which I happily abandoned to do IJ for a third time. I wasn't, as the kids say, feeling it.

After Infinite Jest, I read:

Life of Black Hawk, by Black Hawk - definitely worth reading, but mostly for historical reasons

Netherland, by Joseph O'Neill - mediocre

Indignation, by Philip Roth - very good

Now I'm re-reading Nature's Metropolis, which is unbelievably good.

I've read other things while reading IJ, the most notable of which Never Let Me Go I highly recommend. I feel like I can't switch back to non-fiction because I have just ended a very long fiction hiatus so I've been devouring fiction. I decided to stick with the Time 100 list because it hasn't failed me yet. Right after I finished IJ I started reading The Spy Who Came in From the Cold, which is good, but jarringly different. I just got my copy of the annotated Dracula in the mail today, and I'm stoked about starting that.

I'm a few hundred pages short of finishing 2666 and about halfway through Raymond Chandler's The Big Sleep. After those two I'm going to start either The Recognitions or Gravity's Rainbow along with...probably either The Orchard Keeper or Kafka's The Castle. Being unemployed isn't all bad.
