I've never played tennis, and I've never been interested in watching it before, but reading about the game in IJ has got me interested in becoming a spectator and possibly interested in learning to play. Has this happened to anyone else? Is anyone else who has never watched tennis before planning to watch the US Open?

i have never watched professional tennis before, until tonight, when i watched federer play this guy who was something like 12th in the world. it took me only a few minutes to figure out how the scoring works. and then, i have to say, the match was really thrilling.

I've never played tennis, but it's been my favorite pro sport for years. I'm certainly grateful that Wallace has given me a window onto the perspective of the players a little bit. I'm actually off to Queens to watch the quarterfinal between Cilic and Del Potro in a little. Fingers crossed for no rain!

I used to play a little when I was a kid and watch tennis occassionally, but I definitely must say reading IJ, and also Wallace's non-fiction piece on Federer has given me much additional appreciation for the sport.

my only knowledge of tennis comes from Infinite Jest and DFW's essay, "Federer as Religious Experience." and i recall in the essay that he noted the difference between watching tennis on TV and watching tennis in person. but i still really enjoyed the federer match. federer dominated the first game, but the other guy was right with him the rest of the way, and almost forced a fifth game.

Never played tennis, but now I am interested in watching it. DFW has given me a new view of the game.

When I was in high school, we played badmitton; a poor man's tennis I guess.

It absolutely increased my interest -- I started watching (sporadically) a few years back thanks somewhat to IJ, but more to his nonfic pieces (tornado alley, the michael joyce piece, and democracy and commerce @ the us open, particularly). I started playing a bit this summer for the first time.
