I had a theory, I don't know how this popped into my head, that Avril is like a physical manifestation of drugs. It seems kind of ridiculous to me, but what do you guys think? Beautiful but crazy and subtly manipulating and quite inescapeable, and Mario is the only one "impervious" to her or whatever, and he also doesn't take real drugs?

Or was this like totally obvious and I just missed it?

She could definitely stand in for some kind of parental-bubble-as-drugs. Remember that Wallace had to leave Amherst in his sophomore year and return home. Even though it was most likely caused by the very real psychological problems he had, Wallace's friends have said that he always felt pretty ashamed that he had to leave, like it was some kind of a failure on his part. That experience, and his interpretation of it, could very well have brought "parents" under the umbrella of addictive forces for Wallace.
