I have chuckled at many things, but "The Toothless Predator: Breast Feeding as Sexual Assault" had me laughing for nearly a minute straight.

Don't have the book with me but in that ridiculously beautiful section b/w pp. 600-620, when it occurs to Erdedy that JvD might be attracted to Gatley in 'an extracurricular way'. Maybe it was just the tension of the context but that line had me going for minutes

I nearly fell off the sofa laughing when I read endnote 90 - specifically when Day rants on about the totalitarianism of not allowing questioning! After I stopped laughing and dried my eyes it struck me that this was exactly my reaction to the whole concept of the previous administration that you were un-patriotic to question the Iraq war. Fabulous stuff on nearly every page of this book.

The total chaos that Eschaton devolves into had me laughing the whole time. Particularly when the game master is pushing the cart through the snow covered court and spinning his little beanie propellor and tennis balls are fired all around him and Pemulis just berating him from outside the court.

"...Schacht was just looping the "d" in mail fraud when...."

"I offered to get the fork out, though..."

I always fall for the throw away jokes just slipped in under the radar.

Day to Lenz: "Obtain a watch. A fine, digital, incredibly wide watch, about five times the width of your wrist, so you have to hold it like a falconer, and it treats time like pi."

Next page:
"Then during the post-meet mixer and dance Pemulis's defaulted opponent ate from the hors d'oeuvres table without using utensils or at one point even hands, did a disco number when there wasn't any music going, and was finally heard telling the Port Washington Headmaster's wife that he'd always wanted to do her from behind. Pemulis spent a lot of time whistling and staring innocently up at the pre-fab ceiling."

god, I love the Peemster. 8-) Allston rules.

On p 411 there starts a Hal essay about the fate of television advertising, speculative much like the videophone essay, and not far off the mark if you've seen enough freecreditreport.com and male-enhancement commercials...

At one point the advertising company he discusses is referred to as "the Icarian Viney and Veals," which adjective was so perfect and funny that I had to stand up from reclined reading out of respect...

the film critics watching The Joke who studied themselves studying themselves frantically taking notes, until all the espresso they drank at the concession stand sends them to the bathroom

Right at the beginning, p12: 'I do things like get in a taxi and say, "the library, and step on it." '

Cracks me up. Something about the quiet desperation I can picture in Hal's eyes.
