Steeply and Marathe are discussing how DuPlessis has died in the chapter identified as 30 April Year Of the Depends Adult Undergarment (p. 94)--"an inept burglary and grippe." The chapter where Don Gately breaks into the Brookline house and DuPlessis is bound and gagged and then "passes bluely from this life" (p. 59) is titled Autumn--Year of Dairy Products of the American Heartland (p. 55).
Are Steeply and Marathe speaking months later about the death of DuPlessis, only just finding out about it? Or talking together about something that happened last year but for the first time between themselves? Or does the Don Gately chapter begin in the Year of Dairy Products but end up in the following year even though there is no break between the toothbrush in their butts caper and the beginning of the Brookline caper? The Year of Dairy Products is directly before the Year of the Depends Adult Undergarment then in either case, right?

Well, since no one else bothered: I think it's just that Marathe and Steeply haven't talked about Duplessis' death before. Both would have known about it within at least a few days. Since Duplessis' family was out on a leaf-watching trip, it seems he died in the autumn.
