I'm dying to know what Byzantine erotica is all about but, sadly, Google and Wikipedia are of no use. DFW probably could have told me that.

The Byzantine Empire! After years of tumultuous government and untrustworthy politicians, one ruler separated the Roman Empire into two portions, one being the Byzantine Empire. It's just the typical Wallace embrace of awkward obscurity.

Byzantine's a good one to mention. Used as an adjective it means intricately complex or devious and surreptitious, which describes the whole book pretty well.

someone already said it, but: post-prandial!

i get so tickled when i'm doing something after dinner and then can use the word post-prandial in relation to it. i just wish it sounded as good out loud as it does in my head.
