Location: UTAH. Yes I'm from Utah. No I'm not a Mormon.
My cousin was asking me if I thought he was smart enough read IJ. He's really a smart guy, but I told him he isn't patient enough to read it. It got me wondering: What do you think is more important? Does this book require patience or intelligence? I realize they aren't mutually exclusive, but which one do you think is more important with IJ?

Patience because even if you feel you are not smart enough you can look up every word you dont understand, however to do so would also require patience.

Can't patience eventually lead to intelligence?

Well, there are different types of intelligence, I've heard (emotional, social, physical, etc.). Whatever "intelligence" means, exactly. Wikipedia says it's an "umbrella term". And then there's the predisposition for complex thinking and mapping and particular pattern recognition, how does that come about, now that's a question.

Thinking does, however, appear to require practice. And it's not easy to distinguish between mental-physical processes such as emotions, thoughts, etc. Which all get mixed up, or disguise themselves (emotions that appearing to be thoughts, for example, some research suggests). And takes time. And we live in fast times. I find myself trying to slow down, refusing to respond right away, studying, reading books (IJ is a good example), just generally attempting to create myself a method of making sense of Thinking in this 2.0 3.0 hyperbranded advertising-over-mantrad superabstract yet superirrational universe.

Which is where patience comes in. Back to reading now, switching of the computer monitor.

So, returning to your question, well, yeah, maybe, it could. In a way. Or protect one from stupidity, and routine "thinking", at least. :) That giving-yourself-time to think things over for yourself, take notes. Patiently.

I don't think IJ requires above average intelligence. Patience, on the other hand...

I think neither intelligence or patience are required - simply that the writings of DFW resonate with you. For most people this happens the moment the read one of his shorter works. I definitely wouldn't recommend starting this novel to someone who has yet to discover if his writing captivates them.

I don't believe in forcing things.

Considering this is a group that consists entirely of people reading Infinite Jest, isn't this topic a little self-congratulatory? Let's not make this about swelling our heads.

Thank you. I am an ephebe in terms of my experience of DFW. I think that reading IJ and taking active part in this forum is the best way I could have ever started my journey with his work. I certainly have received helpful responses to questions and posts from more seasoned readers that I am very grateful for. I am just afraid that after IJ what's next? Don't think I will ever be the same. In a good way.
First time reader of DFW.
(ephebe is one of my favorite IJ words)

It's good you've caught the bug! I think you'll find that, even though it's tragic he decided his time here was up, the work DFW did give us is enough to last a lifetime. I've encountered few authors as re-readable as DFW. I'm a little jealous you have so much of his writing left to explore!
