Good for a quick laugh:

Came across this found-animal report on a local Animal Welfare League website and of course it made me think of the feral hamsters--and their origin in the released (anti-Edenic?) couple Ward and June ...I speculate that DFW would appreciate the absurd humor of this (all-male) hamster pair rolling down the street in an exercise ball:

Quote:
April 7, 2009
3900 Block Columbia Pike

A man surrendered two hamsters in a hamster ball that he found rolling down the street near the 3900 block of Columbia Pike. The two hamsters were determined to be male and since male hamsters usually fight, they were housed in separate cages at the shelter. The next day a woman called to report her hamsters missing. She said her children had been playing in the yard with the hamsters in their ball and they came inside and forgot about them. When they went outside to look for the hamsters later, they could not find them. The woman reclaimed the hamsters. Shelter staff gave her an aquarium so that the hamsters could be housed separately and advised her to take one of the hamsters to a veterinarian for treatment of an apparent health problem.

Hilarious!

I have found that since I started reading IJ, I have unconsciously adopted an imitation of DFW's writing style, and as a result I have to be careful when I write e-mails; my sentences have been getting longer and more rambling and train-of-thought-ish than they ever used to be.

I couldn't help but think about Infinite Summer when the Wimbledon was on a week ago.

Re hamsters in an exercise ball
two nights ago my dog was going ape-shit half the night barking at the wall..
Come to find out..my daughter had forgotten she put little Ruby the albino hamster in her exercise ball and
she rolled herself into my room and got stuck in the wires behing my desk..
my kid had forgotten ruby 12 hours earlier...
Ruby seemed no worse for the enforced isolation... she lives with bernice formerly Bernard who is her mother..
The excitement never ends this summer!!
I once heard the most beautiful phrase in the English language is " summer aftenoon."
apropos of nothing

Every time I go to the convenience store on campus and see the Toblerone chocolate, I think of IJ.

Talking of Toblerone, what's with the umlaut on the first o of it in Infinite Jest? Does another country spell it like that? Wikipedia doesn't seem to think so, nor does Google images...just a typo?
For me Toblerone's pop-culture association will always belong to John Cooper Clarke though:- "and the way she eats 'er toblerone - says a Post-War glamour girl is never alone".

I've used the words "and but so" in e-mails a couple times in the last couple weeks.
