Technically, it's the Dude. The Big Lebowski was the "rich" Lebowski.


haha I really like this idea, too, The Big Lebowski being one of my favorite films. However, because of the time line of the book, The Big Lebowski would have already existed at the time Hal was writing that paper (even though it didn't exist at the time DFW was writing as Hal)! The last year before subsidization was 1997, and The Big Lebowski came out the year after that! But silly literary paradoxes aside, I think this is a great insight. The Dude really does seem to be the "hero" that is the closest to embodying Hal's ideas.
