well, i guess i was just thinking about sadness and the way people deal with it. Since Mario thought Mom wasn't sad Hal was saying the second way to lower a flag to half-mast is to raise the pole. I took that to mean, well a few things. Talking about either distractions, laughter, forced happiness to get you through sadness - where you may not appear sad.

That's what I got out of it and helped me understand myself and others a bit more.

May not be at all what he was getting at but it amazed me :)

Organization of North American Nations Collegiate Athletics Association. It's the new NCAA.

The IJ wiki and the Infinite Jest Wikipedia pages define most of these.

Who is writing this? Typically anything first-person is Hal, but it's clear from the nature of the nightmare it isn't Hal. Hal has been at ETA for far too long a time to wake up to a nightmare about being out of place. "Your first nightmare away from home and folks, your first night at the Academy, it was there all along. . ."

I thought maybe he was recalling a MUCH earlier nightmare, but "your first nightmare away from home and folks" makes it seem as though that's not the case.

One possibility I've considered is that Hal moved to the dormitory later on in his time at ETA. Perhaps he lived with his parents for the first years and then eventually moved, had the nightmare, etc.

This part was actually kind of amazing. Yes, I could barely keep it in my head and make sense of it, but wow. From a purely geographical/architectural point of view, stunning. Definitely reading it again.

p.61-63

Yeah, I took this to be from Hal, at some point in IJ's mixed up narrative.

Huh - that seems to be the consensus, but I assumed it was Troeltsch, having a doped-up "daydream" referenced in the paragraph just before the perspective change.

I had another idea with regards to the interview with the Deans. We don't know whose perception of Hal is the truth. We have a choice of three different perspectives: Is he acting like something unHuman? Is he smarter than the room? Is he just a gentle sensitive boy? Who in the room, if anyone, is able to see the real Hal?
