also turns up in David Lynch's Twin Peaks. When Agent Cooper first enters the "red room" it flits as a shadow across the red drapes behind the Little Man. I don't want to say more in case there are some of you who haven't seen Twin Peaks and don't want spoilers (if you haven't seen Twin Peaks GO OUT AND WATCH IT RIGHT NOW!) but the resemblance is so uncanny, and the situations are strangely cognate...

anyone else obsessed enough with twin peaks to remember that?

Absolutely! I started watching Twin Peaks not long after reading IJ and, man, I can really see the influence.
In the first episode when Cooper's talking about the murder with Harry and just changes the subject ('Ya just gotta tell me about these trees') it felt like I was reading IJ again.

It's worth noting that Wallace was in fact quite familiar with Lynch's work. Take a look at for some of Wallace's thoughts on David Lynch (among other things). Wallace appears at about 25 minutes in, & the Lynch stuff is just a few minutes after that.

the great thing about the triangle shadow in Twin Peaks is that--of all the images in the red room--this one makes the least sense within the context of the story. that is, there's an enormous amount of symbolism that's being worked, but the triangle-shadow...it's never explained, and doesn't seem to have any symbolic resonance with other thematic strands in the series. unless it's supposed to look like a single mountain. crap.

The one passage of Infinite Jest that stuck with me most.

Not overly familiar with Twin Peaks though. Not a huge Lynch fan.
