Also, the fact that Orin referred Helen Steeply to Bain as a good source on JOI is telling about Bain and JOI's relationship. Maybe a good look at the redacted Q's of Helen and Bain's avoidance of some of the questions can tell us how close JOI and Bain were at the time - possibly even closer than Orin and James had been, making the whole deal that much more likely.

Excellent. I'd forgotten about Bain appearing in JOI's films. (Incidentally, the Back Bay thing has an odd extra-textuality in that my paperback version of IJ is from the Back Bay Books imprint.) Bain's and JOI's close relationship would have to have been, on some level, painful for Orin. Add this to probably several reasons why they don't speak anymore.

While this doesn't exactly add anything to the discussion, I thought you all should know that this book takes place largely in Boston, where Wallace spent 6 months on an AA program. So, the back bay thing is more a result of Wallace being a Bostonian rather than having some awesome meta-book-is-self-aware sort of thing. Also, if I remember correctly, the Incandenzas lived somewhere besides the back bay on the original manuscript. Where exactly, I can't recall. Probably insignificant. Probably.

someone do a search on Bain? Can't quite pull it off on my phone.
