There are a few sections of the book with the subheader "gaudeamus igitur" -- Eschaton, and 11/20 YDAU, when Hal is starting to notice that people aren't seeing the emotions that he's feeling in him.
According to wikipedia, it is the first line of a 13th century song about university life traditionally sung at graduations. The literal translation is "let us rejoice therefore".
I really have no idea what it could mean, but it hasn't been mentioned at all in this forum. Any ideas?

It appears preceding sections on the date of November 8, which is Interdependence Day (The holiday celebrating Continental Reconfiguration).

It does also appear in two sections on November 20th, which is the date of the E.T.A. fundraiser.

I assumed it was just some kind of exclamation to indicate that these were special days or celebrations.

It was/is kind of a universal academic anthem. Gaudeamus igitur, juvenes dum sumus, "Let us rejoice therefore while we are young." The tune is still familiar. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aLUKfU2AOBY

I know one of our esteemed bloggers explained it in depth. The song also references the inevitability of death, as in "Eat, drink and merry, for tomorrow we die."
