Does anyone know if the unedited (original ) 1700 word version is available anywhere? Also wondering who edited the book? Mainly I'm wondering if that version has more to say about the the events at the end and the missing year. Anyone have any info on this stuff? Thanks |

Michael Pietsch, who posted here on the Infinite Summer, was the editor of the book. The original draft is not available anywhere. Steven Moore owns the only copy outside of what might be in the author's estate. More about that here: http://www.thehowlingfantods.com/dfw/ij-first.html |

if This Is Water and the DFW bio books coming out next year sell well, I can't imagine some variation of the 1700 page version not being released, even if in a limited edition. |

Many years ago, I emailed briefly with a woman (who I think had initially posted to wallace-l) who, according to her, DFW had had a bit of a crush on in maybe the early 90s and he gave her one of two drafts of IJ that he had printed up. She told me they were in two huge volumes. I think she said she toted them around Europe and enjoyed them -- but then gave them back to DFW. I'm not sure if I have her email about it anymore, but she could not recall much about the draft as compared to the published product. (DFW once said there was a lot of stuff about teeth that got cut; the person he dedicates the book to is his grandfather, who was a dentist). She did say that the little white dots were not always in the center of the pages, though. They seemed to bounce around, like tennis balls or maybe pills. I wonder if Moore's copy of the second copy of that manuscript. *** In D.T. Max's New Yorker article, he says there were apparently drafts and drafts of IJ in DFW's garage. If Little Brown came out with anything like the original manuscript -- or parts of various drafts -- I'd camp out in front of a store for a week to get a copy. I know I would not be alone. |
