I just joined IS (started reading on my own and heard about this group) I'm on page 311. This may have previously come up BUT, what is O.N.A.N.?!?-- It's driving me crazy and if I missed it, or forgot it, I just don't have the energy to go back and try to find it. Has anyone started a list of unknowns to date? I loved that the years finally came up and often return to p.223. |

Organization of North American Nations. Onan was a character in the Bible who spilled his seed; masturbation is pejoratively called "onanism." DFW deliberately constructed the acronym. |

What, exactly, did you just join? Haha, irony. No, but seriously, the abbrevs. were some of my favorite parts, especially when I could figure them out. Sort of like solving a crossword puzzle, but often funnier. |
