...when Gately sees PGOAT for the first time and ALL of the work he's done in sobriety and existentially too, for that matter, totters on the edge of the abyss ... I really heard the narrator up there and the sheer hopelessness in that passage was amazing. Anyone who's been depressed or addicted or both knows the terror of the finality and ultimateness bound up in that feeling ... it's like not being able to breathe and feeling like your bowels are going to empty all at once. Page numbers later, because it really is a chilling bit of the book. |
