also, i didn't realize that Hal decided to go completely clean in the month leading up to the Whataburger. if that's the case, then unless Pemulis DOES drug him (which I suppose is possible but unlikely, for a variety of reasons), it seems really unlikely to me that he took the DMZ at all. i'm becoming more and more convinced that his aphasic state is a function of his withdrawal--the kind of thing that happened to Himself after going cold turkey in the months leading up to his suicide.

what about that conversation Mario has with Avril in her office? Mario's just been talking to people (LaMont Chu, eg) who are really worried about what went down disciplinarily after the Eschaton incident and the ONANTA urine guy's arrival. Mario goes up to Avril's office to ask about whether Hal's going to be OK, and then he starts asking questions about how you know someone's sad? Avril starts going on about how people withdraw, become despondent and uninterested in activities that used to be meaningful. Mario says, yes, but what if someone is becoming MORE himself, not less himself? I have to think he's talking obliquely about Hal when he's asking these questions...and if so, I'm trying to figure out how that fits with Hal's progressive inability to be understood.

of course, it's interesting that the facial expressions that Hal notices on Kevin Bain as he crawls toward the yogurt guy as an infant asking to be loved are maybe not unlike the kinds of horrific behaviors the AZ tennis folks see in Hal when he tries to speak...maybe Hal IS becoming more the grieving infant, his "true" inner self with needs that he won't seem to acknowledge--and that self expresses itself where Hal isn't even aware of it...?

Agreed. I think Hal views the Entertainment and it affects him like that. That was JOI's intent, after all- to reach Hal. In the wraith scene, JOI says pretty blatantly that it's about reaching the child in his son. That, and given the subject matter of the Entertainment (apologizing to a bassinet) it seems to make sense that if Hal did see it, he'd be having some infantile life pain, or what have you.

Dunno if the passage actually reads that way, but that did just trip something with me. Is Hal becoming more Himself?
