Just think of us all, scattered around the world, trying to find the optimal position to read this tome! I prefer propped against the sofa arm, good light behind me, pillow in lap as a cushion, notebook open and ready on the sofa. Until the dog jumps up and slobbers on everything. I also read in bed on my back again using a pillow to prop it up. There's no way I'd hold it up over me, I know I would doze off and down it would come! Thanks for that great warning!

yes, that is a great picture. I saw a woman reading it on the subway. she was struggling to hold it. I wanted
to talk with her but the little witch wouldn't make eye contact.

Sitting at my computer desk so I can have onelook.com Online; so many words in IJ are not in most dictionaries. Also, it's much easier to have some support under this huge book.

In the Poang chair with feet on the ottoman. Of course reading it on the iPhone makes lifting easier. :)

What a good resource!

Uh oh, the year of TSDB can expand to Texas Schoolbook Depository Building. I smell an elaborate conspiracy theory.

caroldelucia, thanks for the anecdote. The instant but casual recognition by DFW of what happened to your book just seems so perfect. Have tried the bathtub route, without such dramatic results.

Am traditionally of the "flat on back on couch" or propped up in bed" approach, but this re-read, I find myself really enjoying plastic patio chair in back yard while the dogs race around and wrestle -- puts me in an upright position, book on lap, but still lets me feel like I'm in recreational, rather than scholarly mode. Tho when I crack up, it confuses the dogs.

On the subway, both hands gripping the damn thing for all they're worth. My forearms are beginning to look like Popeye's.

I love the image of the book falling on your head like a brick.
Reminds me of the story in IJ of the bricklayer who was trying to get health benefits... with a stagggering BAL... The bricks coming down on him.. then he is flying upwards then the barrell falling on him. Carol

I love that we actually meet this guy later--Doony Glynn, in the halfway house, with diverticulitis. What I also love is that everyone was convinced that he was just trying to run an insurance scam--i.e., how could anyone be that stupid--when in fact, he really is, truly, that stupid.
