Does anyone else want to learn more about this?

I am fascinated by this idea.

Oh, I have re-read J.O.I's filmography. I see some parellels between scenes in the book with his movies. I get the feeling I am reading about watching his films.

My book has the riots as being in 1997. Anyway, it's supposedly a reference (or intertextual joke, call it what you will) to a book called Ratner's Star by Don DeLillo. The riots happen in that book.

Ooh, thanks for that tip! I picked up a copy of Ratner's Star a while back (shortly after devouring DeLillo's White Noise), but I had a hard time getting into that one and never ended up finishing it. I'll need to try it again.

I don't want to read DeLillo. He's so male. Let's just actually throw a language riot at MIT. Spring break maybe? I'll get some UC Santa Cruz Linguistics grad students to come, they're c-r-a-z-y! It'll be great.

There's really not that much info about the Riots in Ratner's Star. If I remember correctly, they're actually referred to in RS as the MIT Grammar (not Language) Riots, and they're just referred to in passing. It's towards the beginning of the book, if you're looking for it. Definitely check it out: Ratner's is one of DeLillo's most interesting books. So Weird.

I put up a longish post on this topic on my blog, not just laying out the reference but also talking about how it relates to what DFW has to say about addiction:
